One of the questions we get most often: should I do a Seine river cruise?
Yes, for first-time visitors. It's a genuinely different perspective on the city, and the views from the water are ones you simply can't get on foot. That said, not all cruises are equal, and timing matters a lot.
Here's what you need to know.
What You Actually See
A standard Seine cruise lasts about 1 hour 10 minutes and covers the stretch from the Eiffel Tower to the Île Saint-Louis and back. Along the way you'll see:
- The Eiffel Tower from the water (genuinely impressive, the base is much larger than it looks from the ground)
- Notre-Dame Cathedral from the Seine (the best angle to see the flying buttresses)
- The Louvre and the Pont des Arts
- The Grand Palais and Pont Alexandre III (the most photographed bridge in Paris)
- The Île de la Cité, the original island where Paris was founded
You won't disembark anywhere. This is a sightseeing cruise, not a transport service. But as a way to get a sense of how Paris is structured around the river, it's excellent.
The Classic Option: Bateaux Mouches
The Bateaux Mouches are the original and most famous Paris river cruise company. They've been running since 1949. The boats are large, the commentary is available in multiple languages, and the route covers all the major landmarks.
It's unapologetically touristy, and that's fine. It does what it says it does, very reliably.
The Unusual Option: Amphibious Bus
This one is great for families and people who want something genuinely different. The amphibious bus starts as a normal city tour on dry land, then drives directly into the Seine and continues as a boat.
The reaction when the bus hits the water is always memorable. Children love it. Adults are surprised they love it too.
When to Go
Sunset is the best time for a Seine cruise. The golden light on the stone bridges and the Eiffel Tower is spectacular. Most operators have a departure around 7 to 8 PM in summer.
Night cruises are popular but we find them less interesting. The floodlighting is impressive but you lose the detail of the buildings. Worth doing if sunset isn't possible.
Midday in summer is the worst time: harsh light, very crowded, hot on the open deck. Avoid if you can.
Is It Worth It?
For first-time visitors: yes. It gives you a useful overview of where everything is, and the views of Notre-Dame and the Eiffel Tower from the water are ones you'll remember.
For repeat visitors who've already done it: probably not. The time is better spent in a neighbourhood you haven't explored.
For people with limited mobility: excellent option. The boats are accessible, the route covers a lot of ground without any walking, and the views are genuinely good.
One Alternative Worth Knowing
If you want a river experience without a cruise boat, the Vélib' bike rental along the Seine banks is excellent. The Berges de Seine (the riverside promenade on the Left Bank) is pedestrianised and very pleasant in the evening. Free, and more Parisian than any tour boat.
